Canon SL2 versus Canon G1 X

The Canon EOS Rebel SL2 (called Canon 200D in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G1 X are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in June 2017 and January 2012. The SL2 is a DSLR, while the G1X is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (SL2) and an 1.5-inch (G1X) sensor. The SL2 has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the G1X provides 14.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G1 X is notably smaller (16 percent) than the Canon SL2. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the SL2 nor the G1X are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G1X has a lens build in, whereas the SL2 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the SL2 gets 650 shots out of its LP-E17 battery, while the G1X can take 250 images on a single charge of its NB-10L power pack.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon SL2 vs Canon G1 X

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon SL2 features an APS-C sensor and the Canon G1 X an 1.5-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G1X is 21 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.85. The sensor in the SL2 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G1X offers a 4:3 aspect.

In terms of chip-set technology, the SL2 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 7) than the G1X (DIGIC 5), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon SL2 and Canon G1 X sensor measures

With 24MP, the SL2 offers a higher resolution than the G1X (14.2MP), but the SL2 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.30μm for the G1X). However, the SL2 is a somewhat more recent model (by 5 years and 5 months) than the G1X, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

SL2 versus G1X MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under review, the SL2 provides substantially higher image quality than the G1X, with an overall score that is 19 points higher. This advantage is based on 1.9 bits higher color depth, 2.6 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.7 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the SL2 provides a higher frame rate than the G1X. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the G1X is limited to 1080/24p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The SL2 has a touchscreen, while the G1X has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The SL2 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the G1X has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the G1X was succeeded by the Canon G1X Mark II.

Arguments in favor of the Canon PowerShot G1 X:

  • Sharper images: Has stabilization technology build-in to reduce the impact of hand-shake.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in January 2012).

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
