Canon SL1 vs 1D
The Canon EOS Rebel SL1 (called Canon 100D in some regions) and the Canon EOS-1D are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in March 2013 and September 2001. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are based on an APS-C (SL1) and an APS-H (1D) sensor. The SL1 has a resolution of 17.9 megapixels, whereas the 1D provides 4.1 MP. Body comparison: Canon SL1 vs 1D
The physical size and weight of the Canon SL1 and the Canon 1D are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 1D is considerably larger (132 percent) than the Canon SL1. Moreover, the 1D is substantially heavier (289 percent) than the SL1. It is noteworthy in this context that the 1D is splash and dust-proof, while the SL1 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor (as in the 1D) will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, while more compact options are available for the smaller-sensor camera (SL1). Concerning battery life, the SL1 gets 380 shots out of its LP-E12 battery, while the 1D can take 500 images on a single charge of its NP-E3 power pack. As can be seen in the images above, the 1D has a battery grip built in. This facilitates image-taking in portrait orientation and gives it additional battery power. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The SL1 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 92 percent) than the 1D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
Sensor comparison: Canon SL1 vs 1D
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon SL1 features an APS-C sensor and the Canon 1D an APS-H sensor. The sensor area in the 1D is 65 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.3. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
In terms of chip-set technology, the SL1 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 5) than the 1D (DIGIC), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon SL1 offers a higher resolution of 17.9 megapixels, compared with 4.1 MP of the Canon 1D. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 11.56μm for the 1D). However, it should be noted that the SL1 is much more recent (by 11 years and 5 months) than the 1D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.
The SL1 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during video recording.
The Canon EOS Rebel SL1 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS-1D are ISO 200 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-3200..

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The SL1 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the 1D does not. The highest resolution format that the SL1 can use is 1080/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The SL1 has one, while the 1D does not. While the built-in flash of the SL1 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The SL1 writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the 1D uses Compact Flash cards. The 1D features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the SL1 only has one slot.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D (unlike the SL1) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the SL1 and the 1D have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 1D was replaced by the Canon 1D Mark II, while the SL1 was followed by the Canon SL2.

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
