Canon R5 vs Fujifilm XP120
The Canon EOS R5 and the Fujifilm FinePix XP120 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in July 2020 and January 2017. The Canon R5 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the XP120 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a full frame (Canon R5) and a 1/2.3-inch (XP120) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 44.8 megapixels, whereas the Fujifilm provides 15.9 MP.

The XP120 can be obtained in three different colors (blue, yellow, green), while the Canon R5 is only available in black.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm XP120 is considerably smaller (42 percent) than the Canon R5. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments. More than that, the XP120 is water-proof up to 20m and can, thus, be used for underwater photography.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The XP120 was launched at a lower price than the Canon R5, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon R5 features a full frame sensor and the Fujifilm XP120 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the XP120 is 97 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 5.6. The sensor in the Canon R5 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the XP120 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 44.8MP, the Canon R5 offers a higher resolution than the XP120 (15.9MP), but the Canon R5 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.39μm versus 1.33μm for the XP120) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the Canon R5 is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 6 months) than the XP120, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the XP120 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Canon R5 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the Canon R5 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 41 x 27.3 inches or 104 x 69.4 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 32.8 x 21.9 inches or 83.2 x 55.5 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 27.3 x 18.2 inches or 69.4 x 46.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Fujifilm XP120 are 23 x 17.3 inches or 58.5 x 43.9 cm for good quality, 18.4 x 13.8 inches or 46.8 x 35.1 cm for very good quality, and 15.4 x 11.5 inches or 39 x 29.3 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon R5 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Canon EOS R5 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 51200, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm FinePix XP120 are ISO 100 to ISO 3200 (no boost).

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the Canon R5 provides a higher video resolution than the XP120. One feature that is present on the Canon R5, but is missing on the XP120 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.The Canon R5 has an articulated LCD that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in snapping selfies. In contrast, the XP120 does not have a selfie-screen.
The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the Canon R5 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).
The Canon R5 and the Fujifilm XP120 both have an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The Canon R5 writes its imaging data to CFexpress or SDXC cards, while the XP120 uses SDXC cards. The Canon R5 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. It is notable that the Canon R5 has a hotshoe, while the XP120 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.
The Canon R5 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the XP120 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay).
