Canon R5 vs SX1
The Canon EOS R5 and the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in July 2020 and September 2008. The Canon R5 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the SX1 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a full frame (Canon R5) and a 1/2.3-inch (SX1) sensor. The Canon R5 has a resolution of 44.8 megapixels, whereas the SX1 provides 10 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon SX1 is notably smaller (17 percent) than the Canon R5. It is worth mentioning in this context that the Canon R5 is splash and dust resistant, while the SX1 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The SX1 was launched at a lower price than the Canon R5, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon R5 features a full frame sensor and the Canon SX1 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the SX1 is 97 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 5.6. The sensor in the Canon R5 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the SX1 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 44.8MP, the Canon R5 offers a higher resolution than the SX1 (10MP), but the Canon R5 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.39μm versus 1.67μm for the SX1) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the Canon R5 is a much more recent model (by 11 years and 9 months) than the SX1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the SX1 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Canon R5 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the Canon R5 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 41 x 27.3 inches or 104 x 69.4 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 32.8 x 21.9 inches or 83.2 x 55.5 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 27.3 x 18.2 inches or 69.4 x 46.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon SX1 are 18.2 x 13.7 inches or 46.3 x 34.7 cm for good quality, 14.6 x 10.9 inches or 37.1 x 27.8 cm for very good quality, and 12.2 x 9.1 inches or 30.9 x 23.2 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon R5 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Canon EOS R5 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 51200, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS are ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-3200.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the Canon R5 provides a higher video resolution than the SX1. It can shoot video footage at 8k/30p, while the SX1 is limited to 1080/30p.

One feature that is present on the Canon R5, but is missing on the SX1 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.The Canon R5 has an articulated LCD that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in snapping selfies. In contrast, the SX1 does not have a selfie-screen.
The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the Canon R5 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).
The Canon R5 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The Canon R5 writes its imaging data to CFexpress or SDXC cards, while the SX1 uses SDHC cards. The Canon R5 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the SX1 only has one slot. The Canon R5 supports UHS-II cards (Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 312 MB/s), while the SX1 cannot take advantage of Ultra High Speed SD cards.

It is notable that the Canon R5 has a microphone port, which is missing on the SX1. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.
The Canon R5 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the SX1 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the SX1 from Canon.
