Canon M3 versus Canon G7 X Mark II
The Canon EOS M3 and the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2015 and February 2016. The EOS M3 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the G7X Mark II is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (EOS M3) and an one-inch sensor. The EOS M3 has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the G7X Mark II provides 20 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G7 X Mark II is notably smaller (14 percent) than the Canon M3. Cameras that are intended for semi-professional or professional use are sometimes a bit bulkier in order to provide them with the necessary ruggedness. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the EOS M3 nor the G7X Mark II are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G7X Mark II has a lens build in, whereas the EOS M3 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon M3 features an APS-C sensor and the Canon G7 X Mark II an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G7X Mark II is 65 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.7. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 24MP, the EOS M3 offers a higher resolution than the G7X Mark II (20MP), but the EOS M3 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 2.41μm for the G7X Mark II) due to its larger sensor. However, the G7X Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the EOS M3, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the G7X Mark II provides a faster frame rate than the EOS M3. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the EOS M3 is limited to 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The EOS M3 and the G7X Mark II are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. The images are, thus, framed using live view on the rear LCD. The G7X Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the EOS M3 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the EOS M3 was succeeded by the Canon M6.
So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Canon M3 or the Canon G7 X Mark II – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Advantages of the Canon EOS M3:
- More detail: Offers more megapixels (24 vs 20MP) with a 10% higher linear resolution.
- Better low-light imaging: Features bigger pixels on a larger sensor for better high-ISO images.
- Faster shutter: Has a higher mechanical shutter speed (4000/sec vs 2000/sec) to freeze action.
- More flexible: Accepts interchangeable lenses, so that lens characteristics can be altered.
- More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in February 2015).
Arguments in favor of the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II:
- Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (1080/30p vs 1080/60p).
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (8 vs 4.2 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- Ready to shoot: Has an integrated lens, whereas the EOS M3 necessitates an extra lens.
- More compact: Is smaller (106x61mm vs 111x68mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
- Less heavy: Has a lower weight even though it has a lens build in (unlike the EOS M3).
- More modern: Was introduced somewhat (1 year) more recently.
If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the G7X Mark II comes out slightly ahead of the EOS M3 (6 : 5 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the EOS M3 or the G7X Mark II handle or perform in practice. At times, user reviews, such as those published at amazon, address these issues in a useful manner, but such feedback is on many occasions incomplete, inconsistent, and unreliable. The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
