Canon G9 X Mark II versus Fujifilm X70

The Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II and the Fujifilm X70 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2017 and January 2016. Both the G9X Mark II and the X70 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an one-inch (G9X Mark II) and an APS-C sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 16 MP.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G9X Mark II was launched at a markedly lower price (by 34 percent) than the X70, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G9 X Mark II features an one-inch sensor and the Fujifilm X70 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X70 is 217 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon G9 X Mark II offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 16 MP of the Fujifilm X70. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 4.80μm for the X70). However, it should be noted that the G9X Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 11 months) than the X70, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X70 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The G9X Mark II is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X70 comes with a build-in prime. The G9X Mark II has a 28-84mm f/2.0-4.9 optic and the X70 offers a 28mm f/2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Canon and Fujifilm provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the Fujifilm has less tele-photo reach at the long end. The G9X Mark II offers the faster maximum aperture.
