Canon G5 X Mark II vs R5 C
The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II and the Canon EOS R5 C are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in July 2019 and January 2022. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The G5X Mark II was launched at a lower price than the R5 C, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G5 X Mark II features an one-inch sensor and the Canon R5 C a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the R5 C is 645 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Technology-wise, the R5 C uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC X) than the G5X Mark II (DIGIC 8), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.
With 44.8MP, the R5 C offers a higher resolution than the G5X Mark II (20MP), but the R5 C nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.39μm versus 2.41μm for the G5X Mark II) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the R5 C is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 6 months) than the G5X Mark II, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.
The resolution advantage of the Canon R5 C implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the R5 C for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 41 x 27.3 inches or 104 x 69.4 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 32.8 x 21.9 inches or 83.2 x 55.5 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 27.3 x 18.2 inches or 69.4 x 46.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon G5 X Mark II are 27.4 x 18.2 inches or 69.5 x 46.3 cm for good quality, 21.9 x 14.6 inches or 55.6 x 37.1 cm for very good quality, and 18.2 x 12.2 inches or 46.3 x 30.9 cm for excellent quality prints.
The R5 C has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II has a native sensitivity range from ISO 125 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 125-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS R5 C are ISO 100 to ISO 51200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-102400.
In terms of underlying technology, the G5X Mark II is build around a BSI-CMOS sensor, while the R5 C uses a CMOS imager. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the R5 C provides a better video resolution than the G5X Mark II. It can shoot movie footage at 8k/60p, while the G5X Mark II is limited to 4K/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The G5X Mark II has one, while the R5 C does not. While the built-in flash of the G5X Mark II is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
Both cameras have an articulated rear screen that can be turned to be front-facing. It is notable that the R5 C has a microphone port, which can help to improve the quality of audio recordings by attaching an external microphone. The G5X Mark II does not feature such a mic input.
