Canon G3 X versus Nikon W300
The Canon PowerShot G3 X and the Nikon Coolpix W300 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in June 2015 and May 2017. Both the G3X and the W300 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an one-inch (G3X) and a 1/2.3-inch (W300) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the Nikon provides 15.9 MP. Body comparison: Canon G3 X vs Nikon W300

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon W300 is notably smaller (22 percent) than the Canon G3 X. Moreover, the W300 is substantially lighter (68 percent) than the G3X. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments. More than that, the W300 is water-proof up to 30m and can, thus, be used for underwater photography.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The W300 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 61 percent) than the G3X, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Canon G3 X vs Nikon W300
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G3 X features an one-inch sensor and the Nikon W300 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the W300 is 76 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 5.6. The sensor in the G3X has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the W300 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 20MP, the G3X offers a higher resolution than the W300 (15.9MP), but the G3X nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 1.33μm for the W300) due to its larger sensor. However, the W300 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 11 months) than the G3X, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the W300 provides a better video resolution than the G3X. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The G3X and the W300 are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. The images are, thus, framed using live view on the rear LCD. Both the G3X and the W300 have zoom lenses build in. The G3X has a 24-600mm f/2.8-5.6 optic and the W300 offers a 24-120mm f/2.8-4.9 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Canon and Nikon provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the Nikon has less tele-photo reach at the long end. Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.

Reasons to prefer the Canon PowerShot G3 X:

- Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 502g or 68 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
- Water-proof: Can be used in the rain and for underwater photography (up to 30m).
- More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (61 percent cheaper at launch).
- More modern: Was introduced somewhat (1 year and 11 months) more recently.
If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the match-up finishes in a tie (8 points each). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the G3X or the W300. The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
