Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. The LX5 has the particularity of featuring a switch that allows to toggle between multiple aspect ratios, while maintaining the same field of view and full image resolution.

Even though the LX5 has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 10 megapixels. This implies that the LX5 has a lower pixel density and marginally larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 2.14μm versus 2.07μm for the G12), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. The Canon PowerShot G12 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 3200, which can be extended to ISO 80-12800. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 offers exactly the same ISO settings.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both the G12 and the LX5 have zoom lenses built in. The G12 has a 28-140mm f/2.8-4.5 optic and the LX5 offers a 24-90mm f/2.0-3.3 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Panasonic provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the Canon, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. The LX5 offers the faster maximum aperture.
