If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 1Ds Mark II is considerably larger (190 percent) than the Canon G12. It is noteworthy in this context that the 1Ds Mark II is splash and dust-proof, while the G12 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The G12 was launched at a lower price than the 1Ds Mark II, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G12 features a 1/1.7-inch sensor and the Canon 1Ds Mark II a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the 1Ds Mark II is 1909 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 4.6 and 1.0. The sensor in the G12 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the 1Ds Mark II offers a 3:2 aspect.

In terms of chip-set technology, the G12 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 4) than the 1Ds Mark II (DIGIC II), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon G12 and Canon 1Ds Mark II sensor measures

With 16.6MP, the 1Ds Mark II offers a higher resolution than the G12 (10MP), but the 1Ds Mark II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 7.21μm versus 2.07μm for the G12) due to its larger sensor. However, the G12 is a much more recent model (by 5 years and 11 months) than the 1Ds Mark II, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

The resolution advantage of the Canon 1Ds Mark II implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the 1Ds Mark II for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 25 x 16.6 inch or 63.4 x 42.3 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 20 x 13.3 inch or 50.7 x 33.8 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 16.6 x 11.1 inch or 42.3 x 28.2 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon G12 are 18.2 x 13.7 inch or 46.3 x 34.7 cm for good quality, 14.6 x 10.9 inch or 37.1 x 27.8 cm for very good quality, and 12.2 x 9.1 inch or 30.9 x 23.2 cm for excellent quality prints.

The Canon PowerShot G12 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 3200, which can be extended to ISO 80-12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II are ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-3200.

G12 versus 1Ds Mark II MP

Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the 1Ds Mark II offers substantially better image quality than the G12 (overall score 27 points higher). The advantage is based on 2.9 bits higher color depth, 0.1 EV in additional dynamic range, and 3.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The G12 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the 1Ds Mark II does not. The highest resolution format that the G12 can use is 720/24p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The G12 has one, while the 1Ds Mark II does not. While the built-in flash of the G12 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The G12 writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the 1Ds Mark II uses Compact Flash cards.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1Ds Mark II (unlike the G12) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.

Both the G12 and the 1Ds Mark II have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 1Ds Mark II was replaced by the Canon 1Ds Mark III, while the G12 was followed by the Canon G15.
