Canon G1 X Mark III versus Canon G16
The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III and the Canon PowerShot G16 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in October 2017 and August 2013. Both the G1X Mark III and the G16 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (G1X Mark III) and a 1/1.7-inch sensor. The G1X Mark III has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the G16 provides 12 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G16 is notably smaller (8 percent) than the Canon G1 X Mark III. Moreover, the G16 is markedly lighter (11 percent) than the G1X Mark III. It is worth mentioning in this context that the G1X Mark III is splash and dust resistant, while the G16 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G16 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 58 percent) than the G1X Mark III, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G1 X Mark III features an APS-C sensor and the Canon G16 a 1/1.7-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G16 is 87 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 4.65. The sensor in the G1X Mark III has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G16 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 24MP, the G1X Mark III offers a higher resolution than the G16 (12MP), but the G1X Mark III nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 1.87μm for the G16) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the G1X Mark III is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 years and 1 month) than the G16, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/60p).
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the G1X Mark III has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the G16 has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. Both the G1X Mark III and the G16 have zoom lenses build in. The G1X Mark III has a 24-72mm f/2.8-5.6 optic and the G16 offers a 28-140mm f/1.8-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the G1X Mark III provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the G16, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. The G16 offers the faster maximum aperture.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Canon G1 X Mark III or the Canon G16 – has the upper hand? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Reasons to prefer the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III:

- Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 43g or 11 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
- Longer lasting: Gets more shots (360 versus 200) out of a single battery charge.
- More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (58 percent cheaper at launch).
- More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in August 2013).
