Canon G1 X Mark II versus Fujifilm X10
The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II and the Fujifilm X10 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in February 2014 and September 2011. Both the G1X Mark II and the X10 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an 1.5-inch (G1X Mark II) and a 2/3 (X10) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 13 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 12 MP. Body comparison: Canon G1 X Mark II vs Fujifilm X10

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X10 is somewhat smaller (5 percent) than the Canon G1 X Mark II. Moreover, the X10 is substantially lighter (37 percent) than the G1X Mark II. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the G1X Mark II nor the X10 are weather-sealed.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X10 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 25 percent) than the G1X Mark II, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Canon G1 X Mark II vs Fujifilm X10
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G1 X Mark II features an 1.5-inch sensor and the Fujifilm X10 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the X10 is 78 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.85 and 3.9. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.
With 13MP, the G1X Mark II offers a slightly higher resolution than the X10 (12MP), but the G1X Mark II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.49μm versus 2.20μm for the X10) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the G1X Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 2 years and 5 months) than the X10, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X10 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under review, the G1X Mark II has a notably higher overall DXO score than the X10 (overall score 8 points higher), which gives it an advantage in terms of imaging quality. This advantage is based on 1 bits higher color depth, 0.5 EV of lower dynamic range, and 1.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/30p).

Both the G1X Mark II and the X10 have zoom lenses build in. The G1X Mark II has a 24-120mm f/2.0-3.9 optic and the X10 offers a 28-112mm f/2.0-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Canon provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the Fujifilm. Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.
The G1X Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X10 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X10 was succeeded by the Fujifilm X20.

So how do things add up? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon G1 X Mark II and the Fujifilm X10? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Advantages of the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II:

- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (10 vs 5.2 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 203g or 37 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
- Longer lasting: Gets more shots (270 versus 240) out of a single battery charge.
- More affordable: Was released into a lower priced segment (25 percent cheaper at launch).
- More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in September 2011).
If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the G1X Mark II emerges as the winner of the contest (10 : 7 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.
In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the G1X Mark II and the X10 in practical situations. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate. This is where reviews by experts come in. The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
