Canon D30 versus Nikon D5200
The Canon EOS-D30 and the Nikon D5200 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in May 2000 and November 2012. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 3.1 megapixel, whereas the Nikon provides 24 MP. Body comparison: Canon D30 vs Nikon D5200

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D5200 is notably smaller (21 percent) than the Canon D30. Moreover, the D5200 is markedly lighter (26 percent) than the Canon D30. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the Canon D30 nor the D5200 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Yet, since both cameras are based around an APS-C sensor, their respective lenses will tend to have similar dimensions and heft. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The D5200 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 75 percent) than the Canon D30, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Canon D30 vs Nikon D5200
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the D5200 is 12 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 1.6 (Canon D30) and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 24MP, the D5200 offers a higher resolution than the Canon D30 (3.1MP), but the D5200 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.91μm versus 10.29μm for the Canon D30). Yet, the D5200 is a much more recent model (by 12 years and 5 months) than the Canon D30, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The D5200 indeed provides for movie recording, while the Canon D30 does not. The highest resolution format that the D5200 can use is 1080/60i.

Both the Canon D30 and the D5200 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The Canon D30 was replaced by the Canon D60, while the D5200 was followed by the Nikon D5300.

So how do things add up? Which of the two cameras – the Canon D30 or the Nikon D5200 – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Advantages of the Canon EOS-D30:
- Easier setting verification: Has an LCD display on top to control shooting parameters.
- More heavily discounted: Has been available for much longer (launched in May 2000).
Arguments in favor of the Nikon D5200:
- More detail: Has more megapixels (24 vs 3.1MP), which boosts linear resolution by 178%.
- Broader imaging potential: Can capture not only stills but also 1080/60i video.
- Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (3.0" vs 1.8") for image review and settings control.
- More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (921k vs 114k dots).
- More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (5 vs 3 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- More compact: Is smaller (129x98mm vs 150x107mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
- Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 195g or 26 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
- More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (75 percent cheaper at launch).
- More modern: Reflects 12 years and 5 months of technical progress since the Canon D30 launch.
If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the D5200 is the clear winner of the contest (10 : 2 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the Canon D30 and the D5200 in practical situations. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate. This is why expert reviews are important. The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
