Canon 80D versus Canon 6D

The Canon EOS 80D and the Canon EOS 6D are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2016 and September 2012. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are based on an APS-C (80D) and a full frame sensor. The 80D has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the 6D provides 20 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 6D is considerably larger (110 percent) than the Canon 80D. Moreover, the 6D is markedly heavier (5 percent) than the 80D. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor (as in the 6D) will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, while more compact options are available for the smaller-sensor camera (80D). The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The 80D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 43 percent) than the 6D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 80D features an APS-C sensor and the Canon 6D a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the 6D is 156 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon 80D offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 20 MP of the Canon 6D. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.75μm versus 6.57μm for the 6D). However, it should be noted that the 80D is much more recent (by 3 years and 5 months) than the 6D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.

Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). The Overall DXO ratings for the two cameras under consideration are close, suggesting that they provide similar image quality. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the 80D provides a higher frame rate than the 6D. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the 6D is limited to 1080/30p.

The 80D is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 6D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 6D was succeeded by the Canon 6D Mark II.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon 80D and the Canon 80D? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS 80D:

  • More detail: Offers more megapixels (24 vs 20MP) with a 10% higher linear resolution.
  • More dynamic range: Captures a larger spectrum of light and dark details (1.1 EV of extra DR).

  • More compact: Is smaller (139x105mm vs 145x111mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
  • Easier fill-in: Is equipped with a small onboard flash to brighten deep shadow areas.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (43 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More modern: Reflects 3 years and 5 months of technical progress since the 6D launch.

Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS 6D:

  • Better low-light sensitivity: Can shoot in dim conditions (1 stops ISO advantage).
  • Longer lasting: Gets more shots (1090 versus 960) out of a single battery charge.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in September 2012).
