Canon 800D versus Canon G5 X

The Canon EOS 800D (called Canon T7i in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G5 X are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2017 and October 2015. The 800D is a DSLR, while the G5X is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (800D) and an one-inch (G5X) sensor. The 800D has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the G5X provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G5 X is considerably smaller (35 percent) than the Canon 800D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 800D nor the G5X are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G5X has a lens build in, whereas the 800D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 800D gets 600 shots out of its LP-E17 battery, while the G5X can take 210 images on a single charge of its NB-13L power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 800D vs Canon G5 X

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 800D features an APS-C sensor and the Canon G5 X an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G5X is 65 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.7. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 24MP, the 800D offers a higher resolution than the G5X (20MP), but the 800D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 2.41μm for the G5X) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the 800D is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 4 months) than the G5X, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/60p).

 

Feature comparison: Canon 800D vs Canon G5 X

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the G5X has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the 800D has an optical one. So how do things add up? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon 800D and the Canon G5 X? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Advantages of the Canon EOS 800D:

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
