Canon 760D versus Canon G1 X Mark II

The Canon EOS 760D (called Canon T6s in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2015 and February 2014. The 760D is a DSLR, while the G1X Mark II is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (760D) and an 1.5-inch (G1X Mark II) sensor. The 760D has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the G1X Mark II provides 13 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G1 X Mark II is considerably smaller (36 percent) than the Canon 760D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 760D nor the G1X Mark II are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G1X Mark II has a lens build in, whereas the 760D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 760D gets 440 shots out of its LP-E17 battery, while the G1X Mark II can take 240 images on a single charge of its NB-12L power pack.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G1X Mark II was launched at a lower price than the 760D, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 760D vs Canon G1 X Mark II

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 760D features an APS-C sensor and the Canon G1 X Mark II an 1.5-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G1X Mark II is 21 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.85. The sensor in the 760D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G1X Mark II offers a 4:3 aspect.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

With 24MP, the 760D offers a higher resolution than the G1X Mark II (13MP), but the 760D has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.49μm for the G1X Mark II). However, the 760D is a somewhat more recent model (by 11 months) than the G1X Mark II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under review, the 760D provides substantially higher image quality than the G1X Mark II, with an overall score that is 12 points higher. This advantage is based on 1.1 bits higher color depth, 1.2 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.7 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/30p).

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the 760D has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the G1X Mark II relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. That said, the G1X Mark II can be equipped with an optional viewfinder – the EVF-DC1. The G1X Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 760D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 760D was succeeded by the Canon 77D.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon 760D and the Canon G1 X Mark II? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS 760D:

  • More detail: Offers more megapixels (24 vs 13MP) with a 39% higher linear resolution.

  • More framing options: Can be equipped with a hotshoe-mounted accessory-viewfinder.
  • Ready to shoot: Comes with an integrated lens, while the 760D requires a separate lens.
  • More compact: Is smaller (116x74mm vs 132x101mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight even though it has a lens build in (unlike the 760D).
  • Sharper images: Has stabilization technology build-in to reduce the impact of hand-shake.
  • More affordable: Was introduced at a lower price, despite coming with a build-in lens.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in February 2014).

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the 760D is the clear winner of the match-up (11 : 7 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
