Canon 750D versus Canon 1300D

The Canon EOS 750D (called Canon T6i in some regions) and the Canon EOS 1300D (labelled Canon T6 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2015 and March 2016. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The 750D has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the 1300D provides 17.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 1300D is somewhat smaller (2 percent) than the Canon 750D. Moreover, the 1300D is markedly lighter (13 percent) than the 750D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 750D nor the 1300D are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Concerning battery life, the 750D gets 440 shots out of its LP-E17 battery, while the 1300D can take 500 images on a single charge of its LP-E10 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The 1300D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 40 percent) than the 750D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 750D vs Canon 1300D

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.6. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the 750D offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 17.9 MP of the 1300D. This megapixel advantage translates into a 16 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the 750D has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.31μm for the 1300D). Moreover, it should be noted that the 1300D is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 1 month) than the 750D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of individual pixels.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the 750D provides a higher frame rate than the 1300D. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the 1300D is limited to 1080/30p.

Both the 750D and the 1300D have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 750D was replaced by the Canon 800D, while the 1300D was followed by the Canon 2000D.
