The Canon EOS 6D Mark II and the Fujifilm GFX 100 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in June 2017 and May 2019. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm GFX 100 is notably larger (41 percent) than the Canon 6D Mark II. Moreover, the GFX 100 is substantially heavier (73 percent) than the 6D Mark II. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 6D Mark II was launched at a markedly lower price (by 80 percent) than the GFX 100, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 6D Mark II features a full frame sensor and the Fujifilm GFX 100 a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the GFX 100 is 67 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 0.79. The sensor in the 6D Mark II has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GFX 100 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 101.8MP, the GFX 100 offers a higher resolution than the 6D Mark II (26MP), but the GFX 100 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 5.76μm for the 6D Mark II). Yet, the GFX 100 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 10 months) than the 6D Mark II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GFX 100 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm GFX 100 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the GFX 100 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 58.2 x 43.7 inch or 147.9 x 110.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 46.6 x 34.9 inch or 118.3 x 88.8 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 38.8 x 29.1 inch or 98.6 x 74 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 6D Mark II are 31.2 x 20.8 inch or 79.2 x 52.8 cm for good quality, 25 x 16.6 inch or 63.4 x 42.3 cm for very good quality, and 20.8 x 13.9 inch or 52.8 x 35.2 cm for excellent quality prints.

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 40000, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm GFX 100 are ISO 100 to ISO 12800, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-102400.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the GFX 100 provides a better video resolution than the 6D Mark II. One feature that differentiates the GFX 100 and the 6D Mark II is in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The GFX 100 reduces the risk of handshake-induced blur with all attached lenses, while the 6D Mark II has to rely on optical image stabilization in OIS-equipped lenses to achieve the same effect.

The 6D Mark II has an articulated LCD that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in snapping selfies. In contrast, the GFX 100 does not have a selfie-screen.

The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. It is notable that the GFX 100 has a headphone jack, which makes it possible to attach external headphones and monitor the quality of sound during the recording process. The 6D Mark II lacks such a headphone port.
