Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The Z6 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 43 percent) than the 5D Mark IV, which puts it into a different market segment. The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 32000, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Nikon Z6 are ISO 100 to ISO 51200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-204800.

One feature that differentiates the Z6 and the 5D Mark IV is in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The Z6 reduces the risk of handshake-induced blur with all attached lenses, while the 5D Mark IV has to rely on optical image stabilization in OIS-equipped lenses to achieve the same effect.
