Canon 450D vs Fujifilm X30
The Canon EOS 450D (called Canon XSi in some regions) and the Fujifilm X30 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2008 and August 2014. The 450D is a DSLR, while the X30 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (450D) and a 2/3 (X30) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 12.2 megapixels, whereas the Fujifilm provides 12 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X30 is considerably smaller (32 percent) than the Canon 450D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 450D nor the X30 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X30 has a lens built in, whereas the 450D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 450D gets 500 shots out of its LP-E5 battery, while the X30 can take 470 images on a single charge of its NP-95 power pack. The power pack in the X30 can be charged via the USB port, which can be very convenient when travelling.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X30 was launched at a lower price than the 450D, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 450D features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm X30 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the X30 is 82 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 3.9. The sensor in the 450D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the X30 offers a 4:3 aspect.
In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.
With 12.2MP, the 450D offers a slightly higher resolution than the X30 (12MP), but the 450D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.19μm versus 2.20μm for the X30) due to its larger sensor. However, the X30 is a much more recent model (by 6 years and 7 months) than the 450D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X30 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The X30 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Canon EOS 450D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm X30 are ISO 100 to ISO 12800 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X30 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 450D does not. The highest resolution format that the X30 can use is 1080/60p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the X30 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the 450D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The viewfinder in the X30 offers a wider field of view (100%) than the one in the 450D (95%), so that a larger proportion of the captured image is visible in the finder. On the other hand, the viewfinder of the 450D has a higher magnification (0.54x vs 0.43x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye. The 450D writes its imaging data to SDHC cards, while the X30 uses SDXC cards. The X30 supports UHS-I cards (Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s), while the 450D cannot take advantage of Ultra High Speed SD cards.

It is notable that the X30 offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the 450D does not provide wifi capability.
The X30 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the 450D has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 450D was succeeded by the Canon 500D. However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.
