Canon 400D vs Leica V-LUX 1
The Canon EOS 400D (called Canon XTi in some regions) and the Leica V-LUX 1 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in August 2006 and September 2006. The 400D is a DSLR, while the V-LUX 1 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (400D) and a 1/1.8-inch (V-LUX 1) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 10.1 megapixels, whereas the Leica provides 10 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica V-LUX 1 is notably larger (14 percent) than the Canon 400D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 400D nor the V-LUX 1 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the V-LUX 1 has a lens built in, whereas the 400D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 400D features an APS-C sensor and the Leica V-LUX 1 a 1/1.8-inch sensor. The sensor area in the V-LUX 1 is 88 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 4.8. The sensor in the 400D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the V-LUX 1 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 10.1MP, the 400D offers a slightly higher resolution than the V-LUX 1 (10MP), but the 400D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.71μm versus 1.95μm for the V-LUX 1) due to its larger sensor. It is noteworthy in this context that the two cameras were released in close succession, so that their sensors are from the same technological generation. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the V-LUX 1 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The Canon EOS 400D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Leica V-LUX 1 are ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-3200.
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.
Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The V-LUX 1 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 400D does not. The highest resolution format that the V-LUX 1 can use is 480/30p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the V-LUX 1 has an electronic viewfinder (235k dots), while the 400D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The 400D writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the V-LUX 1 uses SDHC cards.

Both the 400D and the V-LUX 1 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The 400D was replaced by the Canon 450D, while the V-LUX 1 was followed by the Leica V-LUX 2. So what is the bottom line? Is the Canon 400D better than the Leica V-LUX 1 or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS 400D:
