Canon 400D vs Fujifilm GFX 50S
The Canon EOS 400D (called Canon XTi in some regions) and the Fujifilm GFX 50S are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in August 2006 and September 2016. The 400D is a DSLR, while the GFX 50S is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (400D) and a medium format (GFX 50S) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 10.1 megapixels, whereas the Fujifilm provides 51.1 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm GFX 50S is notably larger (30 percent) than the Canon 400D. Moreover, the GFX 50S is markedly heavier (33 percent) than the 400D. It is noteworthy in this context that the GFX 50S is splash and dust-proof, while the 400D does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The 400D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 88 percent) than the GFX 50S, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 400D features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm GFX 50S a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the GFX 50S is 341 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 0.79. The sensor in the 400D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GFX 50S offers a 4:3 aspect.
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.
With 51.1MP, the GFX 50S offers a higher resolution than the 400D (10.1MP), but the GFX 50S has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.33μm versus 5.71μm for the 400D). Yet, the GFX 50S is a much more recent model (by 10 years) than the 400D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GFX 50S has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm GFX 50S implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the GFX 50S for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 41.3 x 31 inches or 104.9 x 78.6 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 33 x 24.8 inches or 83.9 x 62.9 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 27.5 x 20.6 inches or 69.9 x 52.4 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 400D are 19.4 x 13 inches or 49.4 x 32.9 cm for good quality, 15.6 x 10.4 inches or 39.5 x 26.3 cm for very good quality, and 13 x 8.6 inches or 32.9 x 21.9 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon EOS 400D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm GFX 50S are ISO 100 to ISO 12800, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-102400.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The GFX 50S indeed provides for movie recording, while the 400D does not. The highest resolution format that the GFX 50S can use is 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the 400D has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the GFX 50S relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. That said, the GFX 50S can be equipped with an optional viewfinder – the EVF-TL1. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The 400D has one, while the GFX 50S does not. While the built-in flash of the 400D is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the GFX 50S is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).
The Fujifilm GFX 50S has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The 400D writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the GFX 50S uses SDXC cards. The GFX 50S features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the 400D only has one slot.
For some imaging applications, the extent to which a camera can communicate with its environment can be an important aspect in the camera decision process. It is notable that the GFX 50S offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the 400D does not provide wifi capability.
Studio photographers will appreciate that the Fujifilm GFX 50S (unlike the 400D) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
The GFX 50S is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the 400D has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 400D was succeeded by the Canon 450D. So how do things add up? Which of the two cameras – the Canon 400D or the Fujifilm GFX 50S – has the upper hand? Is one clearly better than the other? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.

A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
