Canon 400D vs Canon R5
The Canon EOS 400D (called Canon XTi in some regions) and the Canon EOS R5 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in August 2006 and July 2020. The 400D is a DSLR, while the Canon R5 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (400D) and a full frame (Canon R5) sensor. The 400D has a resolution of 10.1 megapixels, whereas the Canon R5 provides 44.8 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon R5 is notably larger (27 percent) than the Canon 400D. Moreover, the Canon R5 is markedly heavier (33 percent) than the 400D. It is noteworthy in this context that the Canon R5 is splash and dust-proof, while the 400D does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The 400D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 80 percent) than the Canon R5, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 400D features an APS-C sensor and the Canon R5 a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the Canon R5 is 163 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Technology-wise, the Canon R5 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC X) than the 400D (DIGIC II), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.
With 44.8MP, the Canon R5 offers a higher resolution than the 400D (10.1MP), but the Canon R5 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.39μm versus 5.71μm for the 400D). Yet, the Canon R5 is a much more recent model (by 13 years and 10 months) than the 400D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.
The resolution advantage of the Canon R5 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the Canon R5 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 41 x 27.3 inches or 104 x 69.4 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 32.8 x 21.9 inches or 83.2 x 55.5 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 27.3 x 18.2 inches or 69.4 x 46.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 400D are 19.4 x 13 inches or 49.4 x 32.9 cm for good quality, 15.6 x 10.4 inches or 39.5 x 26.3 cm for very good quality, and 13 x 8.6 inches or 32.9 x 21.9 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon R5 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Canon EOS 400D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS R5 are ISO 100 to ISO 51200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-102400.
For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon R5 offers substantially better image quality than the 400D (overall score 33 points higher). The advantage is based on 3.2 bits higher color depth, 3.6 EV in additional dynamic range, and 2.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The Canon R5 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 400D does not. The highest resolution format that the Canon R5 can use is 8k/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the Canon R5 has an electronic viewfinder (5760k dots), while the 400D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The viewfinder in the Canon R5 offers a wider field of view (100%) than the one in the 400D (95%), so that a larger proportion of the captured image is visible in the finder. In addition, the viewfinder of the Canon R5 has a higher magnification (0.76x vs 0.49x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The 400D has one, while the Canon R5 does not. While the built-in flash of the 400D is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.The Canon R5 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the 400D does not have a selfie-screen.
The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the Canon R5 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).
The Canon R5 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The 400D writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the Canon R5 uses CFexpress or SDXC cards. The Canon R5 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the 400D only has one slot.

It is notable that the Canon R5 offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the 400D does not provide wifi capability.
The Canon R5 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the 400D has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay).
