Canon 4000D vs SX730
The Canon EOS 4000D (called Canon T100 in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot SX730 HS are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2018 and April 2017. The 4000D is a DSLR, while the SX730 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (4000D) and a 1/2.3-inch (SX730) sensor. The 4000D has a resolution of 17.9 megapixels, whereas the SX730 provides 20.2 MP.

The SX730 can be obtained in two different colors (black, silver), while the 4000D is only available in black.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon SX730 is considerably smaller (46 percent) than the Canon 4000D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 4000D nor the SX730 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the SX730 has a lens built in, whereas the 4000D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 4000D gets 500 shots out of its LP-E10 battery, while the SX730 can take 250 images on a single charge of its NB-13L power pack. The power pack in the SX730 can be charged via the USB port, which can be very convenient when travelling.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 4000D features an APS-C sensor and the Canon SX730 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the SX730 is 92 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 5.6. The sensor in the 4000D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the SX730 offers a 4:3 aspect.
Technology-wise, the SX730 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 6) than the 4000D (DIGIC 4+), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the SX730 offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixels, compared with 17.9 MP of the 4000D. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.18μm versus 4.31μm for the 4000D). Moreover, it should be noted that the 4000D is a somewhat more recent model (by 10 months) than the SX730, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the SX730 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The Canon EOS 4000D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon PowerShot SX730 HS are ISO 80 to ISO 3200 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the SX730 provides a faster frame rate than the 4000D. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the 4000D is limited to 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the 4000D has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. It is notable that the 4000D has a hotshoe, while the SX730 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.
The 4000D is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the SX730 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the SX730 was succeeded by the Canon SX730 HS.
