Canon 250D vs SX700
The Canon EOS 250D (called Canon SL3 in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot SX700 HS are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in April 2019 and February 2014. The 250D is a DSLR, while the SX700 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (250D) and a 1/2.3-inch (SX700) sensor. The 250D has a resolution of 24 megapixels, whereas the SX700 provides 15.9 MP.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The SX700 was launched at a lower price than the 250D, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 250D features an APS-C sensor and the Canon SX700 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the SX700 is 92 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 5.6. The sensor in the 250D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the SX700 offers a 4:3 aspect.
In terms of chip-set technology, the 250D uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 8) than the SX700 (DIGIC 6), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.
With 24MP, the 250D offers a higher resolution than the SX700 (15.9MP), but the 250D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 1.33μm for the SX700) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the 250D is a much more recent model (by 5 years and 1 month) than the SX700, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the SX700 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Canon 250D implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the 250D for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 30 x 20 inches or 76.2 x 50.8 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 24 x 16 inches or 61 x 40.6 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 20 x 13.3 inches or 50.8 x 33.9 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon SX700 are 23 x 17.3 inches or 58.5 x 43.9 cm for good quality, 18.4 x 13.8 inches or 46.8 x 35.1 cm for very good quality, and 15.4 x 11.5 inches or 39 x 29.3 cm for excellent quality prints.
The 250D has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Canon EOS 250D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 25600, which can be extended to ISO 100-51200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon PowerShot SX700 HS are ISO 100 to ISO 3200 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the 250D provides a higher video resolution than the SX700. It can shoot video footage at 4K/25p, while the SX700 is limited to 1080/60p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The 250D has a touchscreen, while the SX700 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.The 250D has an articulated LCD that can be turned to be front-facing. It is notable that the 250D has a hotshoe, while the SX700 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.
The 250D is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the SX700 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay).
