Canon 200D versus Canon 300D

The Canon EOS 200D (called Canon SL2 in some regions) and the Canon EOS 300D (labelled Canon Rebel in some countries) are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in June 2017 and August 2003. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The 200D has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the 300D provides 6.3 MP. Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their size, their sensors, their features, and their reception by expert reviewers.

Body comparison: Canon 200D vs Canon 300D

An illustration of the physical size and weight of the Canon 200D and the Canon 300D is provided in the side-by-side display below. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are presented. All width, height and depth measures are rounded to the nearest millimeter. You can also toggle the display to switch to a percentage comparison if you prefer that the measures are being expressed in relative terms (in this case, the camera on the left – the 200D – represents 100 percent across all the size and weight measures).

Compare Canon 200D vs Canon 300D
200D versus 300D top view
200D and 300D rear side

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 300D is notably larger (24 percent) than the Canon 200D. Moreover, the 300D is substantially heavier (43 percent) than the 200D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 200D nor the 300D are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. In this particular case, both cameras feature the same lens mount, so that they can use the same lenses. You can find an overview of suitable optics in the Canon EF Lens Catalog.

Concerning battery life, the 200D gets 650 shots out of its LP-E17 battery, while the 300D can take 400 images on a single charge of its BP-511 power pack.

The table below summarizes the key physical specs of the two cameras alongside a broader set of comparators. If you want to switch the focus of the display and review another camera pair, just select a new right or left comparator from among the camera models in the table. Alternatively, you can also move across to the CAM-parator tool and choose from the broad selection of possible camera comparisons there.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The 200D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 39 percent) than the 300D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Canon 200D vs Canon 300D

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 300D is 3 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Canon 200D and Canon 300D sensor measures

Despite having a slightly smaller sensor, the Canon 200D offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 6.3 MP of the Canon 300D. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 7.38μm for the 300D). However, it should be noted that the 200D is much more recent (by 13 years and 10 months) than the 300D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.

200D versus 300D MP

Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the 200D provides substantially higher image quality than the 300D, with an overall score that is 24 points higher. This advantage is based on 2.6 bits higher color depth, 2.6 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.9 stops in additional low light sensitivity. The adjacent table reports on the physical sensor characteristics and the outcomes of the DXO sensor quality tests for a sample of comparator-cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The 200D indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the 300D does not. The highest resolution format that the 200D can use is 1080/60p.

Feature comparison: Canon 200D vs Canon 300D

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The 200D and the 300D are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. The table below summarizes some of the other core capabilities of the Canon 200D and Canon 300D in connection with corresponding information for a sample of similar cameras. The 200D is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 300D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 300D was succeeded by the Canon 350D.

Review summary: Canon 200D vs Canon 300D

So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Canon 200D or the Canon 300D – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.

Advantages of the Canon EOS 200D:

  • More detail: Offers more megapixels (24 vs 6.3MP) with a 95% higher linear resolution.
  • Better image quality: Scores substantially higher (24 points) in the DXO overall assessment.
  • Richer colors: Generates images with noticeably better colors (2.6 bits more color depth).
  • More dynamic range: Captures a larger spectrum of light and dark details (2.6 EV of extra DR).
  • Better low-light sensitivity: Requires less light for good images (0.9 stops ISO advantage).
  • Broader imaging potential: Can record not only still images but also 1080/60p movies.

  • Less heavy: Is lighter (by 196g or 30 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (650 versus 400) on a single battery charge.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (39 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More modern: Reflects 13 years and 10 months of technical progress since the 300D launch.

Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS 300D:

  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in August 2003).

If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the 200D is the clear winner of the match-up (16 : 1 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.

200D 16:01 300D

In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the 200D and the 300D in practical situations. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is where reviews by experts come in. The table below summarizes the assessments of some of the best known camera review sites (cameralabs, dpreview, ephotozine, imaging-resource, photographyblog). Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. Also, please note that some of the review sites have changed their methodology and reporting over time.
