Canon 1Ds vs Leica V-LUX 1
The Canon EOS-1Ds and the Leica V-LUX 1 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2002 and September 2006. The 1Ds is a DSLR, while the V-LUX 1 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a full frame (1Ds) and a 1/1.8-inch (V-LUX 1) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 11 megapixels, whereas the Leica provides 10 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica V-LUX 1 is considerably smaller (51 percent) than the Canon 1Ds. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1Ds is splash and dust resistant, while the V-LUX 1 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the V-LUX 1 has a lens built in, whereas the 1Ds is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The V-LUX 1 was launched at a lower price than the 1Ds, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1Ds features a full frame sensor and the Leica V-LUX 1 a 1/1.8-inch sensor. The sensor area in the V-LUX 1 is 96 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 4.8. The sensor in the 1Ds has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the V-LUX 1 offers a 4:3 aspect.
In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.
With 11MP, the 1Ds offers a higher resolution than the V-LUX 1 (10MP), but the 1Ds nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 8.83μm versus 1.95μm for the V-LUX 1) due to its larger sensor. However, the V-LUX 1 is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 11 months) than the 1Ds, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the V-LUX 1 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Canon 1Ds implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the 1Ds for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 20.3 x 13.5 inches or 51.6 x 34.3 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 16.3 x 10.8 inches or 41.3 x 27.5 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 13.5 x 9 inches or 34.4 x 22.9 cm. The corresponding values for the Leica V-LUX 1 are 18.2 x 13.7 inches or 46.3 x 34.7 cm for good quality, 14.6 x 10.9 inches or 37.1 x 27.8 cm for very good quality, and 12.2 x 9.1 inches or 30.9 x 23.2 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon EOS-1Ds has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1250, which can be extended to ISO 50-1250. The corresponding ISO settings for the Leica V-LUX 1 are ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-3200.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The V-LUX 1 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 1Ds does not. The highest resolution format that the V-LUX 1 can use is 480/30p.

One feature that is present on the 1Ds, but is missing on the V-LUX 1 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.The V-LUX 1 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the 1Ds does not have a selfie-screen.
The 1Ds writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the V-LUX 1 uses SDHC cards.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1Ds (unlike the V-LUX 1) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
