Canon 1Ds Mark II vs Fujifilm X-T3
The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II and the Fujifilm X-T3 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2004 and September 2018. The 1Ds Mark II is a DSLR, while the X-T3 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a full frame (1Ds Mark II) and an APS-C (X-T3) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 16.6 megapixels, whereas the Fujifilm provides 26 MP.

The X-T3 can be obtained in two different colors (black, silver), while the 1Ds Mark II is only available in black.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-T3 is considerably smaller (50 percent) than the Canon 1Ds Mark II. Moreover, the X-T3 is substantially lighter (56 percent) than the 1Ds Mark II. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Concerning battery life, the 1Ds Mark II gets 1200 shots out of its NP-E3 battery, while the X-T3 can take 390 images on a single charge of its NP-W126S power pack. As can be seen in the images above, the 1Ds Mark II has a battery grip built in. This facilitates image-taking in portrait orientation and gives it additional battery power. In order to provide similar functionality for the X-T3, Fujifilm provides the VPG-XT3 vertical grip as an optional accessory (see here on eBay). The power pack in the X-T3 can be charged via the USB port, which can be very convenient when travelling.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The X-T3 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 81 percent) than the 1Ds Mark II, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1Ds Mark II features a full frame sensor and the Fujifilm X-T3 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X-T3 is 58 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the X-T3 offers a higher resolution of 26 megapixels, compared with 16.6 MP of the 1Ds Mark II. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 7.21μm for the 1Ds Mark II). However, it should be noted that the X-T3 is much more recent (by 13 years and 11 months) than the 1Ds Mark II, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-T3 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm X-T3 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X-T3 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 31.2 x 20.8 inch or 79.2 x 52.8 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 25 x 16.6 inch or 63.4 x 42.3 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 20.8 x 13.9 inch or 52.8 x 35.2 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 1Ds Mark II are 25 x 16.6 inch or 63.4 x 42.3 cm for good quality, 20 x 13.3 inch or 50.7 x 33.8 cm for very good quality, and 16.6 x 11.1 inch or 42.3 x 28.2 cm for excellent quality prints.
The X-T3 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600, which can be extended to ISO 50-3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm X-T3 are ISO 160 to ISO 12800, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 80-51200.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The X-T3 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 1Ds Mark II does not. The highest resolution format that the X-T3 can use is 4K/60p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the X-T3 has an electronic viewfinder (3690k dots), while the 1Ds Mark II has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. One feature that is present on the 1Ds Mark II, but is missing on the X-T3 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.
The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the X-T3 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).
The Fujifilm X-T3 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The 1Ds Mark II writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the X-T3 uses SDXC cards. The X-T3 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the 1Ds Mark II only has one slot.

It is notable that the X-T3 offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the 1Ds Mark II does not offer wifi capability.
