Canon 1D X vs Panasonic GF2
The Canon EOS-1D X and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in October 2011 and November 2010. The 1DX is a DSLR, while the GF2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a full frame (1DX) and a Four Thirds (GF2) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixels, whereas the Panasonic provides 12 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic GF2 is considerably smaller (71 percent) than the Canon 1D X. Moreover, the GF2 is substantially lighter (80 percent) than the 1DX. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1DX is splash and dust resistant, while the GF2 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Concerning battery life, the 1DX gets 1120 shots out of its LP-E4N battery, while the GF2 can take 300 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLD10 power pack. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The GF2 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 92 percent) than the 1DX, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D X features a full frame sensor and the Panasonic GF2 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the GF2 is 74 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 2.0. The sensor in the 1DX has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GF2 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 17.9MP, the 1DX offers a higher resolution than the GF2 (12MP), but the 1DX nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.95μm versus 4.33μm for the GF2) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the 1DX is a somewhat more recent model (by 11 months) than the GF2, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.
The resolution advantage of the Canon 1D X implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the 1DX for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 25.9 x 17.3 inch or 65.8 x 43.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 20.7 x 13.8 inch or 52.7 x 35.1 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 17.3 x 11.5 inch or 43.9 x 29.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Panasonic GF2 are 20 x 15 inch or 50.8 x 38.1 cm for good quality, 16 x 12 inch or 40.6 x 30.5 cm for very good quality, and 13.3 x 10 inch or 33.9 x 25.4 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon EOS-1D X has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 51200, which can be extended to ISO 50-204800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 are ISO 100 to ISO 6400 (no boost).
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under review, the 1DX provides substantially higher image quality than the GF2, with an overall score that is 28 points higher. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the GF2 provides a faster frame rate than the 1DX. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60i, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the 1DX has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. One feature that is present on the 1DX, but is missing on the GF2 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.
The 1DX writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the GF2 uses SDXC cards. The 1DX features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the GF2 only has one slot.

It is notable that the 1DX has a microphone port, which is missing on the GF2. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.
Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D X (unlike the GF2) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
