Canon 1D X Mark II versus Panasonic ZS200

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II and the Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200 (labelled Panasonic TZ200 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2016 and February 2018. The 1DX Mark II is a DSLR, while the ZS200 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a full frame (1DX Mark II) and an one-inch (ZS200) sensor. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic ZS200 is considerably smaller (73 percent) than the Canon 1D X Mark II. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1DX Mark II is splash and dust resistant, while the ZS200 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the ZS200 has a lens build in, whereas the 1DX Mark II is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 1DX Mark II gets 1210 shots out of its LP-E19 battery, while the ZS200 can take 370 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLG10 power pack. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The ZS200 was launched at a lower price than the 1DX Mark II, despite having a lens build in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1D X Mark II vs Panasonic ZS200

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D X Mark II features a full frame sensor and the Panasonic ZS200 an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the ZS200 is 87 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 2.7. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Canon 1D X Mark II and Panasonic ZS200 sensor measures

Even though the 1DX Mark II has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 20 megapixel. This implies that the 1DX Mark II has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 6.57μm versus 2.41μm for the ZS200), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the ZS200 is much more recent (by 2 years) than the 1DX Mark II, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the 1DX Mark II provides a higher frame rate than the ZS200. It can shoot video footage at 4K/60p, while the Panasonic is limited to 4K/30p.

One feature that is present on the 1DX Mark II, but is missing on the ZS200 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the ZS200 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The 1DX Mark II writes its imaging data to Compact Flash or CFast cards, while the ZS200 uses SDXC cards. The 1DX Mark II features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the ZS200 only has one slot.
