Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The XQ2 was launched at a lower price than the 1D, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D features an APS-H sensor and the Fujifilm XQ2 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the XQ2 is 89 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.3 and 3.9. The sensor in the 1D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the XQ2 offers a 4:3 aspect.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the XQ2 offers a higher resolution of 12 megapixels, compared with 4.1 MP of the 1D. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.20μm versus 11.56μm for the 1D). However, it should be noted that the XQ2 is much more recent (by 13 years and 3 months) than the 1D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the XQ2 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm XQ2 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the XQ2 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 20 x 15 inches or 50.8 x 38.1 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 16 x 12 inches or 40.6 x 30.5 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 13.3 x 10 inches or 33.9 x 25.4 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 1D are 12.5 x 8.3 inches or 31.7 x 21.1 cm for good quality, 10 x 6.6 inches or 25.4 x 16.9 cm for very good quality, and 8.3 x 5.5 inches or 21.1 x 14.1 cm for excellent quality prints.

The XQ2 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.

The Canon EOS-1D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 1600, which can be extended to ISO 100-3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm XQ2 are ISO 100 to ISO 12800 (no boost).

In terms of underlying technology, the 1D is build around a CCD sensor, while the XQ2 uses a CMOS imager. Like most digital cameras, the 1D uses a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. In contrast, the XQ2 employs a more randomized X-Trans layout of photosites, which according to Fujifilm helps to minimize moiré.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The XQ2 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 1D does not. The highest resolution format that the XQ2 can use is 1080/60p.

Feature comparison

One feature that is present on the 1D, but is missing on the XQ2 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

It is notable that the 1D has a hotshoe, while the XQ2 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D (unlike the XQ2) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.

Both the 1D and the XQ2 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The 1D was replaced by the Canon 1D Mark II, while the XQ2 does not have a direct successor.
