Canon 1D vs Canon RP

The Canon EOS-1D and the Canon EOS RP are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2001 and February 2019. The 1D is a DSLR, while the Canon RP is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-H (1D) and a full frame (Canon RP) sensor. The 1D has a resolution of 4.1 megapixels, whereas the Canon RP provides 26.2 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon RP is considerably smaller (54 percent) than the Canon 1D. Moreover, the Canon RP is substantially lighter (69 percent) than the 1D. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1D is splash and dust resistant, while the Canon RP does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The Canon RP was launched at a markedly lower price (by 80 percent) than the 1D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D features an APS-H sensor and the Canon RP a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the Canon RP is 57 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.3 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, the Canon RP uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 8) than the 1D (DIGIC), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon 1D and Canon RP sensor measures

With 26.2MP, the Canon RP offers a higher resolution than the 1D (4.1MP), but the Canon RP has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.74μm versus 11.56μm for the 1D). Yet, the Canon RP is a much more recent model (by 17 years and 4 months) than the 1D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

The resolution advantage of the Canon RP implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the Canon RP for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 31.2 x 20.8 inch or 79.2 x 52.8 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 25 x 16.6 inch or 63.4 x 42.3 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 20.8 x 13.9 inch or 52.8 x 35.2 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 1D are 12.5 x 8.3 inch or 31.7 x 21.1 cm for good quality, 10 x 6.6 inch or 25.4 x 16.9 cm for very good quality, and 8.3 x 5.5 inch or 21.1 x 14.1 cm for excellent quality prints.

The Canon RP has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.

The Canon EOS-1D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 1600, which can be extended to ISO 100-3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS RP are ISO 100 to ISO 40000, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-102400.

1D versus Canon RP MP

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The Canon RP indeed provides for movie recording, while the 1D does not. The highest resolution format that the Canon RP can use is 4K/30p.

 

Feature comparison

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the Canon RP has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the 1D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The viewfinders of both cameras offer the same field of view (100%), but the viewfinder of the Canon RP has a higher magnification than the one of the 1D (0.70x vs 0.55x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye. One feature that is present on the 1D, but is missing on the Canon RP is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The Canon RP has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the 1D does not have a selfie-screen.

The Canon RP has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.

The 1D writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the Canon RP uses SDXC cards.

It is notable that the Canon RP offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the 1D does not offer wifi capability.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D (unlike the Canon RP) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.

The Canon RP is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the 1D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay).
