It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1D Mark III is splash and dust resistant, while the XZ-1 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The XZ-1 was launched at a lower price than the 1D Mark III, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D Mark III features an APS-H sensor and the Olympus XZ-1 a 1/1.7-inch sensor. The sensor area in the XZ-1 is 91 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.3 and 4.4. The sensor in the 1D Mark III has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the XZ-1 offers a 4:3 aspect.
Even though the 1D Mark III has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 10.1 megapixels. This implies that the 1D Mark III has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 7.21μm versus 2.13μm for the XZ-1), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the XZ-1 is much more recent (by 3 years and 10 months) than the 1D Mark III, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.
The Canon EOS-1D Mark III has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200, which can be extended to ISO 50-6400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Olympus XZ-1 are ISO 100 to ISO 6400 (no boost).
Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under review, the 1D Mark III provides substantially higher image quality than the XZ-1, with an overall score that is 37 points higher. This advantage is based on 3.9 bits higher color depth, 1.3 EV in additional dynamic range, and 3.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The XZ-1 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 1D Mark III does not. The highest resolution format that the XZ-1 can use is 720/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the 1D Mark III has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the XZ-1 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. That said, the XZ-1 can be equipped with an optional viewfinder – the VF-2. One feature that is present on the 1D Mark III, but is missing on the XZ-1 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.
The Olympus XZ-1 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The 1D Mark III writes its imaging data to Compact Flash or SDHC cards, while the XZ-1 uses SDXC cards. The 1D Mark III features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the XZ-1 only has one slot.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D Mark III (unlike the XZ-1) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the 1D Mark III and the XZ-1 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 1D Mark III was replaced by the Canon 1D Mark IV, while the XZ-1 was followed by the Olympus XZ-2.
