Canon 1D Mark II N versus Panasonic TZ200

The Canon EOS-1D Mark II N and the Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ200 (labelled Panasonic ZS200 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in August 2005 and February 2018. The 1D Mark II N is a DSLR, while the TZ200 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-H (1D Mark II N) and an one-inch sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 8.2 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 20 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic TZ200 is considerably smaller (71 percent) than the Canon 1D Mark II N. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1D Mark II N is splash and dust resistant, while the TZ200 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the TZ200 has a lens build in, whereas the 1D Mark II N is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The TZ200 was launched at a lower price than the 1D Mark II N, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D Mark II N features an APS-H sensor and the Panasonic TZ200 an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the TZ200 is 79 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.3 and 2.7. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Sensor size

Despite having a smaller sensor, the TZ200 offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 8.2 MP of the 1D Mark II N. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 8.17μm for the 1D Mark II N). However, it should be noted that the TZ200 is much more recent (by 12 years and 5 months) than the 1D Mark II N, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The TZ200 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 1D Mark II N does not. The highest resolution format that the TZ200 can use is 4K/30p.

Feature comparison

The TZ200 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 1D Mark II N has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 1D Mark II N was succeeded by the Canon 1D Mark III.
