Canon 1D Mark II N versus Panasonic LX100 II

The Canon EOS-1D Mark II N and the Panasonic Lumix DC-LX100 II are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in August 2005 and August 2018. The 1D Mark II N is a DSLR, while the LX100 II is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-H (1D Mark II N) and a Four Thirds (LX100 II) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 8.2 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 16.8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LX100 II is considerably smaller (69 percent) than the Canon 1D Mark II N. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1D Mark II N is splash and dust resistant, while the LX100 II does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the LX100 II has a lens build in, whereas the 1D Mark II N is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The LX100 II was launched at a lower price than the 1D Mark II N, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1D Mark II N vs Panasonic LX100 II

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D Mark II N features an APS-H sensor and the Panasonic LX100 II a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the LX100 II is 59 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.3 and 2.0. The sensor in the 1D Mark II N has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the LX100 II offers a 4:3 aspect. The LX100 II has the particularity of featuring a switch that allows to toggle between different aspect ratios, while maintaining the same field of view and full image resolution.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the LX100 II offers a higher resolution of 16.8 megapixel, compared with 8.2 MP of the 1D Mark II N. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.66μm versus 8.17μm for the 1D Mark II N). However, it should be noted that the LX100 II is much more recent (by 13 years) than the 1D Mark II N, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the LX100 II has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The LX100 II indeed provides for movie recording, while the 1D Mark II N does not. The highest resolution format that the LX100 II can use is 4K/30p.

One feature that is present on the 1D Mark II N, but is missing on the LX100 II is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the LX100 II features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The 1D Mark II N writes its imaging data to Compact Flash or SD cards, while the LX100 II uses SDXC cards. The 1D Mark II N features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the LX100 II only has one slot.

The LX100 II is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Panasonic. In contrast, the 1D Mark II N has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 1D Mark II N was succeeded by the Canon 1D Mark III.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
