Canon 1D C vs M100
The Canon EOS-1D C and the Canon EOS M100 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in April 2012 and August 2017. The 1DC is a DSLR, while the M100 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a full frame (1DC) and an APS-C (M100) sensor. The 1DC has a resolution of 17.9 megapixels, whereas the M100 provides 24 MP.

The M100 can be obtained in two different colors (black, white), while the 1DC is only available in black.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon M100 is considerably smaller (72 percent) than the Canon 1D C. Moreover, the M100 is substantially lighter (80 percent) than the 1DC. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1DC is splash and dust resistant, while the M100 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Concerning battery life, the 1DC gets 1120 shots out of its LP-E4N battery, while the M100 can take 295 images on a single charge of its LP-E12 power pack. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The M100 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 97 percent) than the 1DC, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D C features a full frame sensor and the Canon M100 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the M100 is 62 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the M100 offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixels, compared with 17.9 MP of the 1DC. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 6.95μm for the 1DC). However, it should be noted that the M100 is much more recent (by 5 years and 4 months) than the 1DC, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.
The resolution advantage of the Canon M100 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the M100 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 30 x 20 inches or 76.2 x 50.8 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 24 x 16 inches or 61 x 40.6 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 20 x 13.3 inches or 50.8 x 33.9 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 1D C are 25.9 x 17.3 inches or 65.8 x 43.9 cm for good quality, 20.7 x 13.8 inches or 52.7 x 35.1 cm for very good quality, and 17.3 x 11.5 inches or 43.9 x 29.3 cm for excellent quality prints.
The M100 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Canon EOS-1D C has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 51200, which can be extended to ISO 50-204800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS M100 are ISO 100 to ISO 25600 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the 1DC provides a higher video resolution than the M100. One feature that is present on the 1DC, but is missing on the M100 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.The M100 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the 1DC does not have a selfie-screen.
The 1DC writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the M100 uses SDXC cards. The 1DC features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the M100 only has one slot.

It is notable that the 1DC has a hotshoe, while the M100 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.
Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D C (unlike the M100) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the 1DC and the M100 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The M100 was replaced by the Canon M200, while the 1DC does not have a direct successor.
