Canon 1300D versus Sony A58
The Canon EOS 1300D (called Canon T6 in some regions) and the Sony Alpha SLT-A58 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in March 2016 and February 2013. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the Sony provides 19.8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony A58 is notably smaller (6 percent) than the Canon 1300D. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The 1300D was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 25 percent) than the Sony A58, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Canon 1300D vs Sony A58
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the Sony A58 is 11 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 1.6 (1300D) and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 19.8MP, the Sony A58 offers a higher resolution than the 1300D (17.9MP), but the Sony A58 nevertheless has the same individual pixel size (pixel pitch of 4.31μm) as the 1300D due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the 1300D is a much more recent model (by 3 years) than the Sony A58, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the Sony A58 provides a faster frame rate than the 1300D. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60i, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.
Feature comparison: Canon 1300D vs Sony A58
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the Sony A58 has an electronic viewfinder (1440k dots), while the 1300D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. Both the 1300D and the Sony A58 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The Sony A58 was replaced by the Sony A68, while the 1300D was followed by the Canon 2000D.
