Canon 1300D vs Olympus E-P1

The Canon EOS 1300D (called Canon T6 in some regions) and the Olympus PEN E-P1 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in March 2016 and June 2009. The 1300D is a DSLR, while the E-P1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (1300D) and a Four Thirds (E-P1) sensor. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus E-P1 is considerably smaller (35 percent) than the Canon 1300D. Moreover, the E-P1 is markedly lighter (27 percent) than the 1300D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 1300D nor the E-P1 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The 1300D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 44 percent) than the E-P1, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1300D vs Olympus E-P1

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1300D features an APS-C sensor and the Olympus E-P1 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-P1 is 32 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.0. The sensor in the 1300D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the E-P1 offers a 4:3 aspect.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Canon 1300D and Olympus E-P1 sensor measures

With 17.9MP, the 1300D offers a higher resolution than the E-P1 (12.2MP), but the 1300D nevertheless has marginally larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 4.29μm for the E-P1) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the 1300D is a somewhat more recent model (by 6 years and 8 months) than the E-P1, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

The Canon EOS 1300D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Olympus PEN E-P1 are ISO 100 to ISO 6400 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the 1300D provides a higher video resolution than the E-P1. It can shoot video footage at 1080/30p, while the Olympus is limited to 720/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The 1300D has one, while the E-P1 does not. While the built-in flash of the 1300D is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The 1300D writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the E-P1 uses SDHC cards.

It is notable that the 1300D offers wifi support, while the E-P1 does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.

Both the 1300D and the E-P1 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The E-P1 was replaced by the Olympus E-P2, while the 1300D was followed by the Canon 2000D.
