Canon 1300D versus Nikon P900

The Canon EOS 1300D (called Canon T6 in some regions) and the Nikon Coolpix P900 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in March 2016 and March 2015. The 1300D is a DSLR, while the P900 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (1300D) and a 1/2.3-inch (P900) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the Nikon provides 15.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon P900 is notably larger (11 percent) than the Canon 1300D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 1300D nor the P900 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the P900 has a lens build in, whereas the 1300D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 1300D gets 500 shots out of its LP-E10 battery, while the P900 can take 360 images on a single charge of its EN-EL23 power pack.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1300D vs Nikon P900

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1300D features an APS-C sensor and the Nikon P900 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the P900 is 92 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 5.6. The sensor in the 1300D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the P900 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 17.9MP, the 1300D offers a higher resolution than the P900 (15.9MP), but the 1300D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 1.33μm for the P900) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the 1300D is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the P900, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the P900 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the P900 provides a faster frame rate than the 1300D. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.
