Canon 1200D versus Canon SX730

The Canon EOS 1200D (called Canon T5 in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot SX730 HS are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2014 and April 2017. The 1200D is a DSLR, while the SX730 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (1200D) and a 1/2.3-inch (SX730) sensor. The 1200D has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the SX730 provides 20.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon SX730 is considerably smaller (46 percent) than the Canon 1200D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 1200D nor the SX730 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the SX730 has a lens build in, whereas the 1200D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 1200D gets 500 shots out of its LP-E10 battery, while the SX730 can take 250 images on a single charge of its NB-13L power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The SX730 was launched at a lower price than the 1200D, despite having a lens build in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1200D vs Canon SX730

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1200D features an APS-C sensor and the Canon SX730 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the SX730 is 92 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 5.6. The sensor in the 1200D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the SX730 offers a 4:3 aspect.

Technology-wise, the SX730 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 6) than the 1200D (DIGIC 4), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the SX730 offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixel, compared with 17.9 MP of the 1200D. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.18μm versus 4.31μm for the 1200D). However, it should be noted that the SX730 is much more recent (by 3 years and 1 month) than the 1200D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the SX730 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the SX730 provides a faster frame rate than the 1200D. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the 1200D is limited to 1080/30p.

Both the 1200D and the SX730 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 1200D was replaced by the Canon 1300D, while the SX730 was followed by the Canon SX730 HS.
