Canon 1200D versus Canon M50

The Canon EOS 1200D (called Canon T5 in some regions) and the Canon EOS M50 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2014 and February 2018. The 1200D is a DSLR, while the M50 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The 1200D has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the M50 provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon M50 is notably smaller (21 percent) than the Canon 1200D. Moreover, the M50 is markedly lighter (19 percent) than the 1200D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 1200D nor the M50 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Hence, you might want to study the specifications of available lenses in order to get the full picture of the size and weight of the two camera systems.

Concerning battery life, the 1200D gets 500 shots out of its LP-E10 battery, while the M50 can take 235 images on a single charge of its LP-E12 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The 1200D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 42 percent) than the M50, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1200D vs Canon M50

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.6. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Canon 1200D and Canon M50 sensor measures

While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the M50 offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 17.9 MP of the 1200D. This megapixel advantage translates into a 16 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the M50 has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.31μm for the 1200D). However, it should be noted that the M50 is much more recent (by 4 years) than the 1200D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that compensate for the smaller pixel size.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the M50 provides a better video resolution than the 1200D. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/24p, while the 1200D is limited to 1080/30p.

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the M50 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the 1200D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The M50 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 1200D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 1200D was succeeded by the Canon 1300D.

So what is the bottom line? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon 1200D and the Canon M50? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.


Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS 1200D:

However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
