Canon 100D versus Panasonic GF7
The Canon EOS 100D (called Canon SL1 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF7 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in March 2013 and January 2015. The 100D is a DSLR, while the GF7 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (100D) and a Four Thirds (GF7) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 15.8 MP. Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their size, their sensors, their features, and their reception by expert reviewers.
Body comparison: Canon 100D vs Panasonic GF7
The physical size and weight of the Canon 100D and the Panasonic GF7 are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. Three successive views from the front, the top, and the rear are shown. All width, height and depth measures are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic GF7 is considerably smaller (35 percent) than the Canon 100D. Moreover, the GF7 is substantially lighter (35 percent) than the 100D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 100D nor the GF7 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Mirrorless cameras, such as the GF7, have moreover the advantage that they can use many lenses from other systems via adapters, as they have a relatively short flange to focal plane distance.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The GF7 was somewhat cheaper (by 9 percent) than the 100D at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Canon 100D vs Panasonic GF7
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 100D features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic GF7 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the GF7 is 32 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.0. The sensor in the 100D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GF7 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 17.9MP, the 100D offers a higher resolution than the GF7 (15.8MP), but the 100D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 3.77μm for the GF7) due to its larger sensor. However, the GF7 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 10 months) than the 100D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the GF7 provides a faster frame rate than the 100D. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the 100D has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the GF7 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. Both the 100D and the GF7 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 100D was replaced by the Canon 200D, while the GF7 was followed by the Panasonic GX850.

So how do things add up? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon 100D and the Panasonic GF7? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Advantages of the Canon EOS 100D:
- More detail: Offers more megapixels (17.9 vs 15.8MP) with a 8% higher linear resolution.
- Better low-light imaging: Features bigger pixels on a larger sensor for better high-ISO images.
- Easier framing: Has an optical viewfinder for image framing and settings control.
- Faster shutter: Has higher mechanical shutter speed (4000/sec vs 500/sec) to freeze action.
- Longer lasting: Can take more shots (380 versus 230) on a single battery charge.
- More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in March 2013).
Reasons to prefer the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF7:
- Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (1080/60p versus 1080/30p).
- More flexible LCD: Has a tilting screen for odd-angle shots in landscape orientation.
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (5.8 vs 4.9 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- More compact: Is smaller (107x65mm vs 117x91mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
- Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 141g or 35 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
- More legacy lens friendly: Can use many non-native lenses via adapters.
- More modern: Was introduced somewhat (1 year and 10 months) more recently.
If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the GF7 comes out slightly ahead of the 100D (7 : 6 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.
In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the 100D and the GF7 in practical situations. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate. The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
