Canon 100D versus Panasonic G2

The Canon EOS 100D (called Canon SL1 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in March 2013 and March 2010. The 100D is a DSLR, while the G2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (100D) and a Four Thirds (G2) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 12 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic G2 is somewhat smaller (2 percent) than the Canon 100D. However, the G2 is markedly heavier (5 percent) than the 100D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 100D nor the G2 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Mirrorless cameras, such as the G2, have moreover the advantage that they can use many lenses from other systems via adapters, as they have a relatively short flange to focal plane distance.

Concerning battery life, the 100D gets 380 shots out of its LP-E12 battery, while the G2 can take 360 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLB13 power pack.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The 100D was somewhat cheaper (by 8 percent) than the G2 at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 100D vs Panasonic G2

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 100D features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic G2 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the G2 is 32 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.0. The sensor in the 100D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G2 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 17.9MP, the 100D offers a higher resolution than the G2 (12MP), but the 100D has marginally smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 4.33μm for the G2). However, the 100D is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 years) than the G2, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

The 100D has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

100D versus G2 MP

Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under review, the 100D has a notably higher overall DXO score than the G2 (overall score 10 points higher), which gives it an advantage in terms of imaging quality. This advantage is based on 0.6 bits higher color depth, 1 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.8 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the 100D provides a higher video resolution than the G2. It can shoot video footage at 1080/30p, while the Panasonic is limited to 720/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the G2 has an electronic viewfinder (1440k dots), while the 100D has an optical one. Both the 100D and the G2 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The G2 was replaced by the Panasonic G3, while the 100D was followed by the Canon 200D.
