Canon 100D versus Nikon W300
The Canon EOS 100D (called Canon SL1 in some regions) and the Nikon Coolpix W300 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in March 2013 and May 2017. The 100D is a DSLR, while the W300 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (100D) and a 1/2.3-inch (W300) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the Nikon provides 15.9 MP. Body comparison: Canon 100D vs Nikon W300

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon W300 is considerably smaller (31 percent) than the Canon 100D. It is noteworthy in this context that the W300 is splash and dust-proof, while the 100D does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing. More than that, the W300 is water-proof up to 30m and can, thus, be used for underwater photography.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the W300 has a lens build in, whereas the 100D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The W300 was launched at a lower price than the 100D, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Canon 100D vs Nikon W300
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 100D features an APS-C sensor and the Nikon W300 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the W300 is 92 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 5.6. The sensor in the 100D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the W300 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 17.9MP, the 100D offers a higher resolution than the W300 (15.9MP), but the 100D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 1.33μm for the W300) due to its larger sensor. However, the W300 is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 years and 2 months) than the 100D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the W300 provides a better video resolution than the 100D. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the 100D has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. The W300 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 100D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 100D was succeeded by the Canon 200D.

So what is the bottom line? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon 100D and the Nikon W300? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS 100D:
- More detail: Offers more megapixels (17.9 vs 15.9MP) with a 8% higher linear resolution.
- Easier framing: Has an optical viewfinder for image framing and settings control.
- More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (1040k vs 921k dots).
- Fewer buttons to press: Is equipped with a touch-sensitive rear screen to facilitate handling.

- Ready to shoot: Comes with an integrated lens, while the 100D requires a separate lens.
- More compact: Is smaller (112x66mm vs 117x91mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
- Less heavy: Has a lower weight even though it has a lens build in (unlike the 100D).
- Better sealing: Is splash and dust sealed for shooting in inclement weather conditions.
- Water-proof: Can be used in the rain and for underwater photography (up to 30m).
- Sharper images: Has stabilization technology build-in to reduce the impact of hand-shake.
- More affordable: Was introduced at a lower price, despite coming with a build-in lens.
- More modern: Reflects 4 years and 2 months of technical progress since the 100D launch.
If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the W300 emerges as the winner of the match-up (10 : 7 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.
In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the 100D and the W300 in practical situations. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
