Body comparison: Canon 1000D vs Canon D30

The side-by-side display below illustrates the physical size and weight of the Canon 1000D and the Canon D30. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three consecutive views from the front, the top, and the rear side are shown. All size dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter.

Compare Canon 1000D and Canon D30
Compare 1000D versus Canon D30 top
Compare 1000D or Canon D30 rear

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon D30 is notably larger (30 percent) than the Canon 1000D. Moreover, the Canon D30 is substantially heavier (49 percent) than the 1000D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 1000D nor the Canon D30 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. In this particular case, both cameras feature the same lens mount, so that they can use the same lenses. You can compare the optics available in the Canon EF Lens Catalog.

Concerning battery life, the 1000D gets 500 shots out of its LP-E5 battery, while the Canon D30 can take 540 images on a single charge of its BP-511 power pack.

The adjacent table lists the principal physical characteristics of the two cameras alongside a wider set of alternatives. If you would like to visualize and compare a different camera combination, just use the right or left arrows in the table to switch to the respective camera. Alternatively, you can also navigate to the CAM-parator app and make your selection from the full list of cameras there.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 1000D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 85 percent) than the Canon D30, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Canon 1000D vs Canon D30

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Canon 1000D and Canon D30 sensor measures

With 10.1MP, the 1000D offers a higher resolution than the Canon D30 (3.1MP), but the 1000D has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.71μm versus 10.29μm for the Canon D30). However, the 1000D is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 years) than the Canon D30, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

The Canon EOS 1000D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 800, which can be extended to ISO 100-1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS-D30 are ISO 100 to ISO 1600 (no boost).

1000D versus Canon D30 MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). The adjacent table reports on the physical sensor characteristics and the outcomes of the DXO sensor quality tests for a sample of comparator-cameras.

The 1000D offers Live View, so that it can project the live image that the sensor receives onto the rear screen for framing. The Canon D30 lacks this capability. Both cameras are still-image focused and cannot record videos.

Feature comparison: Canon 1000D vs Canon D30

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The 1000D and the Canon D30 are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. The viewfinders of both cameras offer the same field of view (95%), but the viewfinder of the Canon D30 has a higher magnification than the one of the 1000D (0.54x vs 0.51x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye. The table below summarizes some of the other core capabilities of the Canon 1000D and Canon D30 in connection with corresponding information for a sample of similar cameras.

One feature that is present on the Canon D30, but is missing on the 1000D is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The 1000D writes its imaging data to SDHC cards, while the Canon D30 uses Compact Flash cards.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon D30 (unlike the 1000D) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.

Both the 1000D and the Canon D30 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The Canon D30 was replaced by the Canon D60, while the 1000D was followed by the Canon 1100D. Further information on the two cameras, as well as related accessories, can be found on the Canon website.

Review summary: Canon 1000D vs Canon D30

So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Canon 1000D or the Canon D30 – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.

Advantages of the Canon EOS 1000D:

  • More detail: Offers more megapixels (10.1 vs 3.1MP) with a 80% higher linear resolution.
  • Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (2.5" vs 1.8") for image review and settings control.
  • More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (230k vs 114k dots).
  • More compact: Is smaller (126x98mm vs 150x107mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
  • Less heavy: Is lighter (by 248g or 33 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
  • Faster data transfer: Supports a more advanced USB protocol (2.0 vs 1.0).
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (85 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More modern: Reflects 8 years of technical progress since the Canon D30 launch.

Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS-D30:

  • Larger viewfinder image: Features a viewfinder with a higher magnification (0.54x vs 0.51x).
  • Easier setting verification: Features a control panel on top to check shooting parameters.
  • Better studio light control: Has a PC Sync socket to connect to professional strobe lights.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in May 2000).

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the 1000D is the clear winner of the match-up (8 : 4 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.

1000D 08:04 Canon D30

In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras can be instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the 1000D or the Canon D30 perform in practice. At times, user reviews, such as those published at amazon, address these issues in a useful manner, but such feedback is on many occasions incomplete, inconsistent, and unreliable.

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning. Also, please note that some of the review sites have changed their methodology and reporting over time.
