Canon 1000D versus Canon 400D

The Canon EOS 1000D (called Canon XS in some regions) and the Canon EOS 400D (labelled Canon XTi in some countries) are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in June 2008 and August 2006. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 10.1 megapixel. Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their size, their sensors, their features, and their reception by expert reviewers.

Body comparison: Canon 1000D vs Canon 400D

The side-by-side display below illustrates the physical size and weight of the Canon 1000D and the Canon 400D. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three successive views from the front, the top, and the rear are shown. All width, height and depth measures are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If you prefer, you can also use the toggle button to switch to a comparison in percentage terms (in this case, the camera on the left – the 1000D – represents 100 percent across all the size and weight measures).

Compare 1000D and 400D rear

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 400D is notably smaller (14 percent) than the Canon 1000D. However, the 400D is markedly heavier (11 percent) than the 1000D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 1000D nor the 400D are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. In this particular case, both cameras feature the same lens mount, so that they can use the same lenses. You can find an overview of suitable optics in the Canon EF Lens Catalog.

Concerning battery life, the 1000D gets 500 shots out of its LP-E5 battery, while the 400D can take 370 images on a single charge of its NB-2LH power pack.

The table below summarizes the key physical specs of the two cameras alongside a broader set of comparators. If you would like to visualize and compare a different camera combination, just use the right or left arrows in the table to switch to the respective camera. Alternatively, you can also navigate to the CAM-parator app and make your selection from the full list of cameras there.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 1000D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 44 percent) than the 400D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison: Canon 1000D vs Canon 400D

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.6. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of chip-set technology, the 1000D uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 3) than the 400D (DIGIC II), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon 1000D and Canon 400D sensor measures

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 10.1 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the 1000D and the 400D have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the 1000D is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 9 months) than the 400D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time.

1000D versus 400D MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). The following table provides an overview of the physical sensor characteristics, as well as the sensor quality measurements for a selection of comparators.

The 1000D offers Live View, so that it can project the live image that the sensor receives onto the rear screen for framing. The 400D lacks this capability. Both cameras are still-image focused and cannot record videos.

Feature comparison: Canon 1000D vs Canon 400D

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The 1000D and the 400D are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. The following table reports on some other key feature differences and similarities of the Canon 1000D, the Canon 400D, and comparable cameras. Both the 1000D and the 400D have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 400D was replaced by the Canon 450D, while the 1000D was followed by the Canon 1100D.

Review summary: Canon 1000D vs Canon 400D

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon 1000D and the Canon 400D? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.

Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS 1000D:

  • Better jpgs: Has a more modern image processing engine (DIGIC 3 vs DIGIC II).
  • Less heavy: Is lighter (by 54g or 10 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (500 versus 370) on a single battery charge.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (44 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More modern: Is somewhat more recent (announced 1 year and 9 months after the 400D).

Advantages of the Canon EOS 400D:

  • More compact: Is smaller (127x84mm vs 126x98mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in August 2006).

If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the 1000D emerges as the winner of the contest (5 : 2 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.

1000D 05:02 400D

In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the 1000D or the 400D handle or perform in practice. At times, user reviews, such as those published at amazon, address these issues in a useful manner, but such feedback is on many occasions incomplete, inconsistent, and unreliable. This is why hands-on reviews by experts are important. The table below summarizes the assessments of some of the best known camera review sites (cameralabs, dpreview, ephotozine, imaging-resource, photographyblog). The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. Also, kindly note that some of the listed sites have over time developped their review approaches and their reporting style.
