Canon R5 shutter count

Knowing the shutter count is useful when buying or selling a camera, as it provides an indication on how intensively the camera has been used. Unlike some other brands, most Canon cameras do not store the information on the number of shutter releases in the EXIF data of the images taken, and no reference exists in the camera manuals on how to retrieve the shutter count. Nevertheless, the number of shutter actuations is stored within the camera's memory and can be accessed through third-party apps. The latter are based on Canon's software development kit (SDK) that gives remote access to various camera functions.

Finding the right shutter count app

Getting the shutter count, that is the number of times the mechanical shutter of the camera has opened and closed, on the Canon R5 generally requires the download and installation of some software. This downloaded app will then make it possible to establish a connection to your camera and read out the shutter count. Below are the available app-options for the Canon EOS R5.

EOSMSG

The software tool EOSMSG makes it possible to read out the shutter count from a windows-based computer via a USB-connection to the camera. The retrieval of the acuation count also works for newer, mirrorless Canon cameras.

• Different versions of the software exist for different generations of cameras.
• The program requires payment of a small fee (for either single or multiple shutter count readings).

DIRE Studio Shutter Count

Shutter Count by DIRE Studio is an application for Apple MAC and iPhone that can read out the actuation count for a large number of Canon cameras, including newer, mirrorless models.

• Users install the software on their computer and connect the latter to their camera via an USB-cable.
• Use of the program costs US$ 7 for unlimited shutter count read-outs, and US$ 14.99 for the PRO-edition that adds graphing, forecasting, history deduplication and Canon EOS camera management.
• The software operates on Macs (macOS 10.15 or later) and iPhones (iOS 15 or later), and is available in English and French.

Shutter Check

Shutter Check is software for the Apple MAC that can read out the actuation count for a large number of Canon cameras, including newer, mirrorless models.

• Users install the software on their computer and connect the latter to their camera via an USB-cable.
• Use of the program costs US$ 10 for unlimited readings of an unlimited number of cameras.
• The software operates under Mac OS (10.13 High Sierra or later).

Other options to retrieve the shutter count

There are perhaps other options to find the shutter count on the Canon R5. The Canon Shutter Count page provides an overview of available apps and their website-listed compatibility with Canon cameras. But it is possible that the listing of compatible cameras on the app-website is not up to date and that another app might also work with the R5.
