MFT lenses from Panasonic

Since launching the Lumix G1 in September 2008, Panasonic has gradually developed its line of Micro Four-Thirds lenses, and the expansion and refinement of the Lumix and Leica lens-range continues. On average, Panasonic has been adding three new lenses to its line-up per year. So what can we expect for 2016? Well, finally the long awaited Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3 ASPH super-tele zoom became available. Moreover, Panasonic announced at Photokina in September 2016 that a new series of f/2.8-4 lenses is under development that should hit the shelves over the coming months.

Previous roadmaps had indicated that Panasonic was developing a 150mm f/2.8 super-tele lens for mFT (2.8/300mm full-frame equivalent). Yet, this lens does no longer seem to be part of the camera manufacturer's game plan. The high-performance optic has been dropped from the latest lens-system charts. The change of mind is perhaps related to the release of the professional-grade 2.8/40-150mm lens by Olympus in September 2014. This zoom would have been a very strong competitor for Panasonic's 150mm prime and might have limited the latter's appeal for m43 users.

Lens schedule
Panasonic roadmap (2013) with 150mm tele-prime[panasonic]

In any case, Panasonic has established itself as a major lens producer. While the company only provided a total of four lenses for its two Four Thirds cameras, it has released a largely complete set of lenses for mFT, ranging from ultra wideangle to super tele-photo. Indeed, Panasonic has to date launched more lenses for m43 than Olympus. Below is a structured overview of all Panasonic-branded mFT lenses. Similar listings, respectively, of all mFT lenses from Olympus and all autofocus and manual mFT lenses (across all manufacturers that support the system) can be found on separate pages.

One advantage of Micro Four Thirds is that the system is supported by several lens manufacturers. Thus, even though you might primarily be a Panasonic shooter, having a look also at the Olympus roadmap or the m43 lens compendium, which includes third party manufacturer offerings, will provide a more comprehensive view on where mFT is going. Also, in case you are interested to check out how a particular camera-lens combination looks, have a look at the matching tool at four-thirds.org.
